Tari, the six-year-old son of a doctor, is portrayed by the narrator (one of his sisters) in such a distressing way: “I played with my sister when he would just sit in his chair tied to it.”
From the beginning of the story we feel rather uncomfortable by the persistent image of a child being “tied to the armchair”.
“He was not a normal child,” the narrator tells us. Precisely, we would expect a warmer, more comprehensive, affectionate account by the narrator on Tari’s life days.
We wouldn’t like to think of some hints of “burden” noticed here and there: “We never went out in the evenings. Who will look after Tari?”
We would rather think of family responsibility and love.
Don’t these children need be “untied” from a chair for their “self, their mind” to be helped differently? A very challenging topic, indeed, ready for generating much discussion.
Thank you Mrs Anjum Wasim Dar
Dear Reader Thank you for your analytical views. To some extent you are right.’Tied’ creates a binding image. Tari did not know who he was.He had no sense of home, going out or coming back.He would go missing every other day.The family was concerned about loss and cared deeply for him.Yes we do need proper controlled environment and provisions for such children.
Dear Mrs Anjum Wasim Dar
I am very grateful for your quick feedback.
Considering your relevant explanation, I also
feel happy for the idea of deep care and great
responsibility by Tari’s family.
