For Readers
Sarah Mount and Alan Pulverness have created a
new reader development consultancy with the
impossible-to-ignore title of Read or Die! While
we could spend some fruitful time discussing
exactly which part of you would die first if you
stopped reading, we don't need to debate the
fact that reading for pleasure is at a most
interesting crossroads in many countries. The
great cry we hear from all over the world is 'The
kids don't read books any more' which might or
might not be the same as 'the kids don't read
any more'. At the same time the growth of
reading groups in many countries has reached
extraordinary proportions so what is clear is that
overall society is demanding more and more
access to reading material. Responding to this
need in a timely fashion Sarah and Alan, drawing
on a vast wealth of professional and personal
experience, are offering inspiration and guidance
to teachers, librarians, parents and anyone else
interested in setting up and developing reading
groups.
They offer also workshops designed to give
practical support through fresh ideas and
innovative approaches to those already involved
in reader development.
In 2011 and 2012 they are offering the
following workshops:
- Setting up a Reading Group
- Facilitating a Reading Group
- Choosing Texts
- Activities for Reading Groups
- Motivating 'Reluctant' Readers
They will also offer tailor-made workshops to
meet the needs of specific groups.

newbooks is one of the
most comprehensive magazine
titles on offer to avid readers
and for reading groups. The
print magazine is crammed
full of reviews, interviews,
personal views as well as
authoritative features on
writers, books, ideas and
events.
newbooks is edited by
Elsbeth Lindner and publishedl
by Guy Pringle, and manages to adopt a tone which is
informative without being condescending, and analytical
without being offputtingly academic. Thus it is perfect for an
avid or experimental reader looking for new directions as well
as those exploring new literary paths for the first time.
Well worth taking out a subscription!

The websites Visual Thesaurus and its
companion Vocabulary.com are, as the titles
strongly suggest, all about words!
It's the same company and the same information
(more or less) appears on each website, but the
focus is different. In Visual Thesaurus the
focus is on words and their links and has a
wonderful interactive thesaurus for you to play
around with. It is quite magical to see words
jostling for their relative positions with each other.
Try that out, if nothing else!

In Vocabulary.com the focus is on the
Magazine, which you can also access from Visual
Thesaurus easily, but not so coherently. The
magazine has a wealth of articles on the use of
vocabulary in a fast moving and very
contemporary setting, and has substantial sections
devoted to teachers of English as a first and
foreign language. In Vocabulary also has a daily
interactive quiz to test your word power.
Irresistible!
